Mac would not normally have taken such an interest in prisoners. They were usually boring or perverts. She had, in fact, made quite an art since coming to the Duchess at Arms of making herself scarce whenever it was time for them to be fed.
There had been talk about these two though--talk that they were young, both pretty, and possibly well bred. And really, how could she resist that? A pretty brother/sister pair that she could have a...nice conversation with. She smirked.
Maybe her dear brother would be interested too. She made a note to be especially nice, call him James (although, she thought Hillary was a perfectly respectable name); that would probably be enough to coax him into sneaking the prisoners to her room for a night. After all, it would be no fun to talk in the cell, and if Hillary got caught doing it, chances were no one would care. He was, after all, frightening--not at all like Mac remembered him.
She had not expected, however, to meet anyone in the corridor. The scowling figure of the engineer almost tanked Macapos;s mood immediately. They said Maria Lerner didnapos;t like anyone, but Mac thought the woman particularly didnapos;t like her.
"Hullo, Doctor," she said cheerfully.
As her voice filtered into the cell, Mercedes straightened.
"Do you hear that?" she whispered.
"I donapos;t know if I want to." Cameron stilled, though, so they could hear better.
Mac smiled down at the woman. She might have been ninteen, but she was tall. And that was just about the only thing she had on Lerner.
"Lovely day, isnapos;t it?" It was a stupid thing to say, but it was the only thing that came to mind. One of her short curls drooped across her forehead. Men, and women too, always seemed to like that. But Lerner only scowled more deeply.
"Vat are you doing down here, Vench?"
"Well..." Mac smiled sweetly, accentuating her dimple. She didnapos;t mind being a wench, really. Most of the pirates werenapos;t that terrifying. But the engineer was a different story. "I was just coming to see if I needed to feed the prisoners."
"Zey haf been fed."
Inside the cell, Cameron was craning his neck. "What are they saying? I canapos;t make it out..."
"Hush" Mercedes snapped.
Mac picked at her skirt, swinging her hips a bit. "Oh, well. I was just going to peek my head in..."
She had already reached for the door mechanism. Pulling it was the natural next step. She just wanted to see after all. The squealing and screeching of the machinery made her wince--Mac thought she would never get used to that aspect of the life.
Mercedes and Cameron looked alert, but all they saw was a mass of short dark curls and bright eyes. And that was just a flash. The door swung shut again, leaving the siblings alone with its echo.
"What was that about?" Cameron grumbled.
"Owww" Mac pouted outside. The engineer had quite a grip. Even worse, she thought she might melt under the older womanapos;s glare. "Well...Iapos;ll...just be off. Ta"
Scarcely had the words left Macapos;s mouth when she scurried away. How disappointing She had only seen a glimpse--blonde and red hair. How nice it would have been She was still pouting when she emerged on deck.
